Necturus maculosus, the common mudpuppy, is an entirely aquatic
salamander which undergoes paedomorphosis and retains its external
gills. It is found in eastern North America, generally in the Great
Lakes region and in the tributary lands to the St. Lawrence,
Mississippi, and Ohio rivers.
